Winter Chill Reading Program (February 3 – March 2, 2024)
AND The Winter Chill Event (March 2, 2024 – 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.)
David A Howe Library
155 N Main St.
Wellsville, NY 14895

Starting the first Saturday of February, the David A. Howe Library will be hosting their first Winter Reading Program. This event will last four weeks – from Saturday, February 3, through Saturday, March 2 – and is open to community members of all ages!

Each week of the program, we will ask participants to report the amount of time they have spent reading. Children and tweens will color in tracking charts and turn them in each week for an entry to win a grand prize. Teens and adults will receive a bookmark on which to track and will be able to report their progress in-person or online. Library staff will tally all of the minutes reported by participants each week and add them to our thermometer tracker! Our goal is for our community to beat the winter chill by collectively reading for 500 hours during the 4 weeks of the winter reading program. Adults and teens will also have weekly opportunities to enter a trivia contest for an additional prize.

The third week of the winter reading program coincides with Wellsville Central School’s mid-winter break, February 19-23. We encourage caretakers to bring kids and teens to the library to hang out, read, play games, do puzzles, and make use of our Xbox during this time. If you come mid-day during break week, your children and teens will be able to enjoy lunches provided through a partnership with the Salvation Army.

On Saturday, March 2, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., we will wrap up the winter reading program with The Winter Chill. This event will include a movie, hot drinks, snacks, and cozy areas to chill and read or play games. Patrons are encouraged to come in their comfiest clothes and bring cozy blankets. We will draw winners for the children’s and tweens’ grand prizes and the teen/adult trivia prize. Adults and teens who attend will be able to pick up a special treat for participating in the program at this event.

This February, the David A. Howe Library hosted their first winter reading program and asked community members to help them Beat the Chill! by collectively reading at least 500 hours in 4 weeks. The program ends Saturday, March 2, and, to celebrate the Wellsville community’s achievement, the library will host The Winter Chill from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

This event, which is open to all community members, will include a family-friendly movie (Ice Age, the original from 2002), hot drinks, snacks, and cozy areas to chill and read or play games. Patrons are encouraged to come in their comfiest clothes and bring cozy blankets. For winter reading participants, the library will draw winners for the children’s and tweens’ grand prizes and the teen/adult trivia prize. Adults and teens who attend will be able to pick up a Beat the Chill! mug filled with treats for participating in the program.

Each week of the program, participants reported the amount of time they spent reading. Children and tweens colored in tracking charts and turned them in for an entry to win a grand prize. Teens and adults received a bookmark on which to track and reported their progress in-person or online. Library staff tallied all of the minutes reported by participants each week and added them to our thermometer tracker! By the end of week 2, participants had already reported 463 hours read – well on the way to the goal of 500 hours total! Given how successful this year’s program has been, the library plans to repeat this chill event next winter.

Girl Love is a queer folk pop trio bringing an eclectic blend of story and soul. Lead singer, Laura Beth Johnson, is joined by Marc and Hannah LeGrand on a musical journey through jazz, folk, and pop. Their self-titled debut album was released in January boasting whimsical waltzes, poetic folk tunes, and jazzy power ballads. Laura, Marc, and Hannah are all alum of Houghton University and hope that their openly LGBT presence will bring light to the community with their message that all of us are beautifully and wonderfully made.

Stone Circle, a contemporary Irish band, based in Western New York, formed nearly seven years ago. With over fifty years of professional music experience among them, the small group brings a big sound with multi-talented instrumentation. Lead guitar, rhythm guitar, octave guitar, 5-string banjo, 4-string Irish tenor banjo, and fiddle are readily employed on stage. They perform a wide variety of Irish music, from old traditional tunes to contemporary songs, and even some light Celtic rock and their own original music.
